Duvet Covers in Linen

We spend at least a third of our time in bed. One way to make your bedroom a sanctuary is to invest in luxury bedding. Custom made bedding including duvets, pillow case, sheets, and shams can be made to your exact specifications using natural, breathable linen.

There are a few designs that I've made over the years. Including:

Ruched Design

Similar to the ruched pillow, seen below, this design features two vertical rows of delicately tucked ruching. Shown with optional swirly font embroidery.

Queen $298
King $360

Adeline Design, Flange

Just like a plain/knife edge but finished off with a flange top-stitched seam about 1/2 inch inset from the sides.

Queen $270
King $336

Abigail Design, Ruffled edge

Probably the design I'm asked to make the most, this features a 4" ruffle around all four sides.

Queen $320
King $410

Audrey design

Another favorite, this features two vertical rows of petite 1/2" ruffles.

Queen $298
King $336

Picture Frame design

This duvet uses a coordinating color linen to create two bands of vertical stripes. Shown with optional extra large Hattersley font embroidery.

Queen $320
King $410

Linen color offerings

Thought I'd catalogue a full list of what colors of linen I carry. Each is stamped with a code for easy identification. I can usually send a handful of swatches to your home at no cost to you. However, if you'd like to see the full packet, I've got a listing set up on Etsy that is available at minimal cost.

Here's the rundown of colors set up in like groups...

Petite Ruffle Linen Pillows with Victorian Font Embroidery

Super excited to have just finished a new line of pillows.

I've been on the hunt for a fabulous font and was thrilled to find this Victorian style. It measures about 5 x 5 inches, so it really makes an impact.

I made it in several colors including:
black

flax

dove gray

taupe

and asphalt

This particular line was made with a half inch ruffle in a contrasting off white linen with an off white thread color used to do the embroidery. These are available for purchase through my Etsy store. They are custom made to order so feel free to explore changing any of the details to suit your specific needs. Questions? Feel free to email, call or text anytime. : )

Remnants of the Past, June 1-2, 2013

So I recently had the opportunity to sign up for the next Remnants of the Past show.

Tuxedo pillows in lots of colors
For about 10 years now I've been working on my business, Cottage by Design. I've been able to stay at a comfortable workload with customers who either know me locally or who have come to know me through either the blog or Etsy. I like staying small potatoes as my goal is do the sewing, designing, & consulting myself rather than become a manager of the people who would do those things for me. Happiness for me is working on a project in my cottage, Chloe in her basket to keep my company, breeze blowing through the windows, with a view of the birds splashing in the fountain.

White linen with vintage crochet
However, in the back of my mind, I've dreamed of an opportunity to make an impression on a larger audience. Signing on to do the Remnants of the Past show is that push.

Red toile pillow cases

Since signing on, every morning I've been out in the cottage, sketching ideas and making samples. I hear Tim Gunn in my mind rooting me on with, "Make it work!" and challenging me to be cohesive as the time ticks down on my deadline. I'm throwing all I've got at this show. No holds barred. Sink or swim. Big truck, hotel room, staging before hand... All to make that 10 x 20 foot space as fantastic as possible.

White and pale gray linen Euro sham with custom monogram

I hope you can join me at the next show in San Luis Obispo, CA this June 1-2, 2013. Please come say hello. I'll have lemon heads there too. : )

Wish me luck!

Double Ruffle Linen Pillow

The past couple of days have been amazing for me. My dream of sitting in my cottage sewing away, filling orders for people who live across the country has been coming true.

On Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting two ladies who needed a thank you gift. It was a for the hostess who had opened her home so that they could attend the LA Gift Show. The hostess (daughter of one of the ladies) had recently moved into the home and was newly decorating. Mom had a picture of the master bedroom so we were able to collaborate on style and color that would complement the room. They decided on a ruched linen pillow with ruffles that featured a monogram of husband and wife. I was able to hurry home and fill the order, custom monogram and all, within a few hours of meeting them.

The very next day, Saturday, I was sipping my coffee when I noticed an email alert from Etsy. I was asked to make a double ruffle linen pillow in off white linen. LOVE it! Off to my cottage to get started. Within two hours I was wrapping it up with a bow to be shipped to my customer.

I really LOVE what I do!

: )

Feeling Inspired : )

The weather here in Southern California has been absolutely gorgeous lately. It's been inspiring me to get back to sewing for fun, with no other purpose than to see what happens. The days are flying by. Before I know it, hours have passed and it's time to get the girls from school.

This linen is a beautiful light gray that I just started using...
This is "the cottage" where I work.
The perfectionist in me says before I should share, I should have a full photo shoot, product shots, copy written, etc. all uploaded to Etsy. Knowing me, too much time will pass before that would happen. So here are some pictures...

Let me know if you are interested in anything. As always, samples can be sent or come and see me in Fullerton.

All the best to you on this beautiful day!

Million Dollar Decorators

One of the reality shows I'm obsessed with is Bravo's Million Dollar Decorators. I was watching it today while the kids were at school. (There's a new "no TV" rule during the school week to try and keep the nuggets from putting off chores and homework... killing me...). So, I was getting my Tivo on and gasped when I saw one of my pillows on the show!!! OK, so it's not exactly noticeable. And it's not exactly cutting edge design... but still!

That's my finger pointing to it on my tv screen...

Toot.

Toot.

That's me and my horn...

The Perfect Gift

These pillows are so squishy and fun to cuddle up with. They feature a generous 4" long ruffle that is triple gathered around all four sides made of 100% pure linen. I've got many in stock that are ready to ship for that someone special on your gift list including white, rice paper, off white, and natural oatmeal colors. Prices start at $45 for the larger boudoir pillow size (fits a 15" x 22" insert). Can be shipped with or without a premium down and feather insert (add $10 for insert).

Give me a call and I'll be happy to send as many as you need...

Custom Bedding for Helen

Hey there party peeps. Lots going on around here. Just had to share this bedding I've been working on for Helen, a sweet little girl who I think is 8 (maybe 6?). I haven't met her yet... just her Mommy who wanted to surprise her with a room makeover before she got too old for pink and ruffles.

: )

Mom Kim had done some fabric shopping in the past but hadn't found the time to tackle the project. She came to me with two fabrics...15 yards of a paisley and 7ish yards of a stripe. We figured on using those for curtains and a gathered bed skirt for a day bed. Using the palette of those cotton prints, it was easy to find coordinating linens to round out what we needed for the rest of the room.

What did we come up with?

Pale pink linen in a light as air handkerchief weight for the duvet. Maybe a pillow with lots of ruffles if there was any left over. Another linen of dark bronze with pale pink accents to ground the look and keep it from being too sweet. And a final reproduction print from American Folk and Fabric for an accent pillow pulling it all together.

I was so excited to get my hands on the fabric that I finished ahead of schedule. (I think the curtains and bed skirt were done within 2 days of meeting with Kim). I had to wait about a week or so to get the linen in from NY. But once that was washed and ironed, it was so fun to see it come alive.

Lots of ruffles...

Not too sweet...

Just right!

Right?

Have fabric sitting in a closet that you just haven't been able to get to (ahem... Lynette)? Need me to help out? I'd be more than happy to get it done. Let me know...

xoxo

The American Dream

Just reflecting after my quarterly book keeping. As I write this, I can hear the Fullerton High School Band practicing in the stadium down the hill. I wanted to express how great it feels to do my part in making our struggling economy get a boost. From my cottage in the backyard, I sew and design and create... and from those sales, I'm able to chip in to the tax base that helps to run our city.

So often, I hear that taxes are such a pain. Nothing but negative sentiments about it really. I'd like to offer an alternative viewpoint. I am grateful for the American Dream, taxes and all. I look at my city of Fullerton, CA and all that it has to offer. Safety, education, parks, music, the library... stuff that I rely on in a very real way.

Thank you for supporting me in my business.

Customize Your Decor with Embroidery

One of my favorite design details to use is custom embroidery. There are thousands and thousands of computer programs that can be accessed to create a unique piece. Over the years, I've gathered some gorgeous fonts and designs. Here you'll find a gallery of past work. Let it inspire something for you...

large french scroll 4" x 5"

french scroll cranberry on flax linen

french scroll bone on black linen
These next designs are using a technique called applique. It allows you to layer a second fabric on top of the base. A zig zag stitch binds the edges after the excess fabric is cut away.

3 letter monogram 5" x 5.5"
art deco monogram pale pink on hot pink
sand dollar 5" x 5.5"
celtic cross 6.5" x 5"
fleur de lis applique 5.5" x 5"

napoleonic bee 1" x .75"

crown 2" x 4"

crown on 20" x 20 pillow
This next group is using a single letter alphabet font that features a rose and leaves woven through. They are approximately 4" tall.

This next group shows a font that I like to use for children. It has a whimsical, hand written feel to it. I have it in several sizes although it is shown in the extra large size in the pics below.

burp cloth and stroller blanket
bib and patchwork quilt
bib, burp cloth, and blanket

The next two are a standard style script. Largest size of capital letter approximately 1.75 inches.

This is my new favorite single letter font. Approximate height of 4 inches.

white linen pillow with 4" ruffle

half apron with ruffle

tea towels with ruffle

This monogram font is very popular. Approximate size of center letter is 3 inches although smaller fonts are available.

This next design is an old-fashioned Edwardian script. The larger center letter is approximately 2.5" tall. Smaller letters flank either side. Lower case letters available to create words and/or full names.

This is a more masculine, straight letter monogram. It can be done with or without the floral frame of leaves and rosebuds.

This single letter font measures approximately 3.5" tall x 2.5" wide.

single letter Napoleonic font 2" tall

stamped typewriter font

I hope this gives you some ideas about what can be done using embroidery. As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
